PLEASE NOTE:  We do not take responsibility if customers order the wrong size or send us incorrect measurements.  If a harness needs to be returned for exchange, alteration or refund, the postage costs will need to be covered by the customer.

Sledding harnesses are made from 25 mm synthetic webbing with polar fleece padding and are double stitched. The padding extends around the neck and chest areas for added comfort and to reduce rubbing.

Because no two dogs are exactly the same, Windchill sledding harnesses are available in a large range of standard sizes or can made to measure for your dog. There is a  table of standard sizes below, however we can make half sizes or a combination of any dimensions to suit your dog.

For dog sledding using a scooter, bike or cart you will require a Gangline to attach to the dog(s) harness.  The Ganglines must include a shock absorber section so that the risk of jarring injuries to your dog are minimised should your bike, scooter or cart come to a sudden stop while your dogs are running at full speed.

Sledding harness measurementsSizes

Our sizes include standard, long, short and extra short to cater for different breeds and builds, and can be made in half sizes.

Use the information sheet on how to measure your dog for a sledding harness elsewhere in this web site - if your dog's measurements correspond with our Standard sizings you only need to take two measurements, A-B and B-C.

PLEASE NOTE:  when measuring B-D and B-C please follow the lines of the harness as shown on the diagram - do not measure in a direct line between the 2 points for these measurements.  Do not allow for coat - compress the fur as flat as possible when measuring.

Snow sleddingUsing the size chart

Neck fit is critical - measure only on one side of the neck from the point just above the breastbone to the point at the centre front of the withers (dog's shoulder blades).  Hold the tape measure tight against the dog's skin - do not allow for fur.

Length

Measure from the point above the breastbone, down between the front legs then up to the base of the dog's tail.  To find the base of the tail, hold your dog's tail up.

The length is secondary, so get the neck measurement right then choose which length best suits your dog.  If you are not sure, choose a size that is longer rather than shorter.

We offer standard sizes as well as long and short sizes for dogs with different body shapes.

For example, if your dog has a 10 inch neck and a length of 31 inches, you need to order a Size 10 Long.

We can make half sizes for those whose dog's neck measurement falls between two sizes.

For example, a standard Size 10.5 would have a 10.5 inch neck and a length of 30 inches, and a Size 9.5 Short would have a neck measurement of 9.5 inches and a length of 26 inches.

SleddingIf your dog's measurements do not correspond with any of the standard sizes, we can make a harness to the measurements you provide to fit your dog.

Other Sizes

If your dog's measurements don't fit any of those listed in our Standard Size Chart, you can send us your measurements, along with the weight, age and breed of your dog, and we can make a harness to fit your specifications.

Proportions

Most dogs are a fairly standard proportion and the measurements should correspond with the standard sizes, however proportions may vary a little from breed to breed.  As an example of typical proportions:  A-B = 10 inches, B-C = 29 inches, A-D = 13.5 inches, B-D = 16 inches

If your measurements are not in similar proportions to these measurements, please read the instructions carefully and measure again.

PLEASE NOTE:  a correctly fitting harness will appear short on a dog when relaxed - correct fit can only be assessed when the dog is pulling hard.

NOTE:  If you find your harness is not a good fit on your dog, you are welcome to send it back to us for alteration or exchange.

SLEDDING TRAINING ACCESSORIES

Sledding training lead & belly-bandSledding Training Lead      $22.00

The Sledding training lead is an aid to assist with sledding training with your dog without a scooter or sled, ans is particularly useful for teaching turns and passing.

The hand-held lead consists of adjustable shorter and longer section with a snap hook at each end and a handle in the middle.  The longer section of the lead attaches to your dog’s collar.

The shorter section attaches to the toggle loop at the rear of the dog’s harness allowing the handler to keep the harness under tension while guiding the dog with the section attached to the collar.

Belly Band                          $10.00

*Please specify weight or girth measurement of dog

Belly-bandThe training lead comes with an optional belly band (also available separately) which is designed to prevent a dog from backing out of a harness by joining the two sides of an X-back harness on the underside of the dog.

The belly band consists of an adjustable loop which is wrapped around the harness webbing  just in front of the webbing intersect at the ribs (see diagram above).

The belly band should be adjusted so that it is a little loose, but not so loose that the dog can step into or get tangled in it.  When adjusted correctly, the belly band will prevent a dog from backing out of a harness, and can be used in conjunction with the sledding training lead or on it’s own.

The side-release buckle can be easily undone even in cases of a tangle where the belly-band may be pulled very tight, unlike a snap hook which can be difficult to release in emergency situations.

Bungee Lines

1-dog bungee lineIf this is your first harness, you may also need to think about ordering a bungee line, which connects the harness to the scooter or cart.

Windchill bungee lines are made from poly rope and incorporate an elastic "bungee" section which takes up the shock and prevents jarring injuries to the dog.

Bungee lines are available for just one dog, or you can get gangline setups for teams of 2 or more dogs.
